The threat posed to Afghanistan forces by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) is constantly expanding.
According to US Department of Defense (DOD) statistics, the number of IED attacks on Afghanistan forces rose to more than 8,000 last year, from 2,677 in 2007. They are the biggest killer of US and NATO troops, accounting for 275 of the 449 coalition deaths in 2009.
