The U.S. Army is beginning to field smart mortar rounds in Afghanistan, giving infantry commanders the ability to fire at targets with greater precision and from closer ranges. New 120-mm, GPS-guided, XM395 mortar cartridges are expected to reduce the risks of collateral damage, friendly-fire errors, and the number of rounds that must be fired. They also will enable forward-deployed troops to respond faster to immediate threats in the field.
