Following to World War I, despite submarines’ initial successes, pioneers were still eager to find some means to improve their performance. The main question they tried to answer was how to free their boats from the necessity of surfacing frequently in order to charge their batteries. In the early 1930s, however, Dr. Walter's -German engineer of Kiel's Germaniawerft- revolutionary propulsion concepts gave birth to the very first AIP system.
