Timothy A. Ferguson

On January 12, 2025, Timothy A. Ferguson was selected as FBI Assistant Director (AD) at the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division, a position he held in an acting capacity beginning in April 2024. The FBI's CJIS Division provides vital systems and services to local, state, tribal, and federal agencies that help ensure public safety. These include the National Crime Information Center, the FBI's Next Generation Identification System and associated biometric services, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) for firearm purchases, the National Threat Operations Center (NTOS) which receives and processes tips from the public, and the Uniform Crime Reporting Program which publishes crime and law enforcement statistical data. Steering the FBI's largest division, Mr. Ferguson's leadership is defined by a strategic blend of executive acumen and business agility, ensuring that over 3,000 personnel effectively address national security and public safety challenges. His focus is on cultivating leadership development within our ranks while driving innovation. Mr. Ferguson entered on duty with the FBI in August 2002. He held many positions across the organization, including leadership roles from the squad level to executive oversight of violent crime and criminal programs, as well as critical incident response, security, training, and recruitment efforts. Prior to being named Assistant Director for the CJIS Division, Mr. Ferguson served in the FBI's Operational Technology Division as the Chief of the Field Operations Section and the Chief of the Digital Forensics and Analytics Section, and as Deputy Assistant Director of the Operational Programs Branch at the CJIS Division overseeing the NICS Section and NTOS. Mr. Ferguson is a U.S. Army veteran and has a bachelor's degree in English from Welsh College in Nashville, TN, as well as a master's degree in behavioral science from Wright State University in Dayton, OH.
