Taiga has worked in fire and fuels management for 38 years. He started his wildfire career with the BLM in Wyoming in 1988 as an Engine Captain then later for the USFS, NPS, across MT, ID, CO, and UT, and now with the State of Utah in chief officer roles as Fire Management Officer, Fire Staff Officer, and now Deputy State FMO. Throughout his career he attained numerous qualifications such as RXB1, ICCI, OSCC, and SOPL among others, fighting wildfires across the US and is currently an IC on Great Basin CIMT #3. Additionally, he spent a decade on various volunteer fire departments and attained structural firefighting qualifications. His current position responsibilities center around building the state's fuels mitigation and fire prevention programs. He has developed, planned, and led large complex WUI fuel reduction projects, pre-attack planning, numerous large interagency prescribed burns, and currently leads Utah's High-Risk WUI Properties program. He has a MS in Forestry – Fire Ecology and Management and a BS in Aerospace Engineering with a deep interest in fire management and technology with the end user in mind and has pushed for technology adoption such as drones since the early 90s.
