Assistant Director, Forest Service Technology & Development Program US Forest Service

Kristel Johnson currently serves as Assistant Director for the USDA Forest Service National Technology and Development Program (NTDP). In this role Kristel provides strategic leadership, Fire and Aviation Management Operations program oversight, and coordination across multidisciplinary teams, ensuring that emerging technologies are effectively transitioned into operational use. NTDP plays a key role in designing, testing, and deploying tools and systems that enhance safety and efficiency.

With a strong background in fire operations and program management, Kristel is committed to advancing innovation, fostering collaboration, and supporting the workforce through practical, field-driven solutions.

In 2006, she served as a Family Liaison for Jess McLean, one of five firefighters killed in the line of duty on the Esperanza fire which was located on the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern, CA. Her personal experience with this tragedy led to her continued commitment to employee safety and well-being through innovative technology and development to improve firefighting capabilities.
