Chief Stu Sprung
Former Chief of Flight Operations CAL FIREStu Sprung is an aviation and aerial firefighting subject matter expert and advisor in FireTech, aerospace, autonomy, and AI systems integration. He is the former Chief of Flight Operations for CAL FIRE, the second-largest fire department in the U.S. and home to the world’s largest dedicated aerial firefighting fleet, operating 75 fixed and rotary-wing aircraft from 26 air bases statewide.
With 35 years in California fire service, Stu began as a firefighter/paramedic and fire training officer before transitioning into aviation. A dual-rated FAA Airline Transport Pilot, he has more than two decades of professional flight experience in aircraft including the Boeing 737, C-130H Hercules airtanker, UH-1H Super Huey, and OV-10A Bronco. He is a California State Fire Marshal–certified Fire Officer and Instructor, and holds a B.A. in Economics and A.S. degrees in Chemistry and Biology from the University of California, San Diego.
