Douglas G. Smith is the Director of Aerospace Energy at DLA Energy, a position he has held since July 2013. Based in San Antonio, he provides strategic leadership and oversight for the military supply chain of bulk liquid missile and rocket fuels, propellants, and specialty chemicals and gases. Mr. Smith manages a complex portfolio encompassing 92 unique products, supporting critical missions for the Department of War, NASA, and commercial space launch operations at Cape Canaveral SFS and Vandenberg SFB. His responsibilities extend to providing helium support for DOW aerostats deployed overseas, cryogens worldwide, and support to Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Smith served as Associate Director and subsequently Director of Procurement Process Support for DLA Energy from January 2011 to July 2013. As Director, he held the key position of Chief of the Contracting Office (CCO), providing executive direction and oversight for a $20 billion annual contract portfolio spanning six business units.
Mr. Smith's career includes prior roles as Division Chief, E-Procurement for DLA Energy, where he spearheaded the transition to a centralized electronic procurement system, and Division Chief, Utility Privatization Contract Administration. He also has extensive experience as a contracting officer within three cabinet-level departments: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Department of Homeland Security), the Office of the Secretary (Department of Commerce), and various offices within the Department of War.
Mr. Smith is a Senior Executive Fellow from the Harvard Kennedy School, holds a Master of Public Administration from American University, and dual bachelor's degrees in Economics and Supply Chain Management from Michigan State University. He also earned a master's certificate in government contracting from George Washington University and is a member of the Defense Acquisition Corps. Outside of his professional life, Mr. Smith is a San Antonio FC season ticket holder and enjoys international travel with his wife of 22 years, Natalie.
