Colonel Dan Gibson was commissioned as a Field Artillery officer following graduation from the Virginia Military Institute in 1998. His initial assignment was with 2nd Battalion, 319th AFAR at Fort Bragg, NC. After completion of the Field Artillery Captain’s Career Course, COL Gibson was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery, 2nd Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea as the Battalion S-1.

Subsequently, COL Gibson reported to 1st Battalion, 319th AFAR at Fort Bragg, NC and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as the Battalion Fire Direction Officer. In December 2004, he assumed command of B Battery, 1-319th AFAR. He later assumed command of Headquarters Company, 1-505th PIR in January 2005 and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Returning from Iraq in December 2006, he was assigned as the Fire Support Officer for 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.

Following graduation from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, COL Gibson served in 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii as the 3BCT Fire Support Officer and Operations Officer for 3rd Battalion, 7th Field Artillery while deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon return from Afghanistan, he served as the 3BCT Operations Officer and later a maneuver planner in the 25th Infantry Division G-5. In July 2014, he was assigned as an Army Research Fellow at RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, California. COL Gibson returned to the 82nd Airborne Division in September 2015 and assumed command of 2nd Battalion, 319th AFAR in June 2016. While in command of 2-319th AFAR, COL Gibson deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve and supported the Iraqi liberation of Mosul and Tal Afar from ISIS.

Following battalion command, he served as an instructor at the School for Command Preparation at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and subsequently graduated from the Advanced Strategic Leadership Studies Program at the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS). COL Gibson was then assigned to the Joint Staff J-7 Joint Force Development Directorate.

COL Gibson commanded the 82d Airborne Division Artillery at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and most recently served as the 82d Airborne Division Chief of Staff. He is currently serving as the Cross-Domain Fires Division Chief within HQDA G-8 Capability Directorate.

COL Gibson is married to the former Ann Nicastro from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. They have two children, Lore and Ian.
