Lieutenant Colonel Lynn W. Sullivan (Sully) joined the Army on September 11, 2001, choosing to train as a 54B, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Specialist and use the enlistment bonus to marry his high school sweetheart.

When complete with initial training, PFC Sullivan returned to Utah and joined a ROTC detachment, commissioning Aviation in 2004. Following flight school at Fort Novosel (previously Rucker), Alabama, he deployed with 1-17 Cav, 82nd Airborne (Saber) from 2007-2008 out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After returning to Fort Bragg, he moved into the Squadron operations section and deferred going to the Captains Career Course (CCC) to deploy again, this time as a Battle Captain in Kandahar, Afghanistan from 2009-2010. During that deployment he completed training as a Pilot in Command and Air Mission Commander, planned several large scale air assaults, and requested to go to the Military Intelligence (MI) CCC as a broadening opportunity.

While at Fort Huachuca for the MICCC, the Sullivan’s welcomed their third child. Upon course completion they moved to Fort Campbell, and CPT Sullivan deployed again – straight back to Kandahar from 2011-2012, this time as a Brigade Battle Captain with 159th Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. After several months, he was offered command of D. Co 4-101 Aviation (Desperados) out of Forward Operating Base Wolverine. Leading them through redeployment, he then took a second command of A Troop, 7-17 CAV (Azrael), and the Sullivan’s had their 4th child before requesting to be assigned to the National Training Center (NTC) and moving to Fort Irwin, California.

While serving on the Aviation Team (Eagle) at NTC from 2013-2015, CPT Sullivan was a company trainer and then Eagle 03A, the rotation planner as he learned lessons in large scale conventional warfare. In summer 2015, MAJ Sullivan moved his family to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to attend Command and General Staff College. While there he and his wife welcomed two more children, as he was accepted to attend the School of Advanced Military Studies, earning a Masters in Military Art and Science. He then deployed for a 4th time (3rd to Afghanistan), spending 2017-2018 with NATO Special Operations Component Command – Afghanistan (NSOCC-A) / Special Operations Joint Task Force – Afghanistan (SOJTF-A).

Upon return, Sully attended the AH-64D Apache course at Fort Novosel, packed up the family and moved again, this time to Fort Lewis, Washington where MAJ Sullivan was the S-3 and XO of 1-229 Attack Reconnaissance Battalion (Tigersharks). He then moved his family to Colorado Springs, and departed for a one year assignment in Saudi Arabia with the Office of Program Management Saudi Arabia National Guard, serving as a BN trainer, then the J3 and finally the Chief of Staff. Coming back from Saudi Arabia, Sully reported to NORAD & USNORTHCOM (N&NC) as a Homeland Defense planner for eight months before he was nominated to serve as the Executive Assistant to the USNORTHCOM J3 for one year. Following that he was chosen to lead the emergent N&NC Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System effort for the command. In this role he stood up the CUAS Division, sought and received new roles and responsibilities for the command, put two experiments on the range, and validated the first submitted operational requirement for USNORTHCOM in several years.
