Amir Edwards

Special Operations Divison Commander Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority

Lieutenant Amir Edwards, Sr. began his career in law enforcement as a Patrol Officer with the Detroit City Police Department in 1999. He was later selected to serve as a Public Liaison for the Community Policing Division, representing the department and building relationships within the community. While serving as a law enforcement Officer in Detroit he obtained multiple lifesaving awards and meritorious citations for outstanding service to the community. After seven years of dedicated service to the communities of Detroit he embarked on a new career protecting our Nation’s airports with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

After graduating from the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy, he was assigned to the Operational Services Bureau as a Patrol Officer where he worked directly with the traveling public at Ronald Reagan National Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, and the Toll Road. His responsibilities included responding to calls for service and proactively enforcing the security mission.

During his tenure, he was assigned to the Field Training Unit, Defensive Tactics Unit, and the Peer Support team, where he worked with newly sworn and veteran Law Enforcement Officers.

In 2017, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and assigned to the Operational Service Bureau. During his new assignment he was to lead the Crisis Negotiation team. He notes that while holding these positions, he has worked with many great supervisors and teammates to address the critical needs and unique challenges of the Airport community. Notably, Lieutenant Edwards led a team as a part of the mutual aid that responded in support to the United States Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

In 2021, he was officially promoted to Police Lieutenant and assigned to the Special Operations Division where he is currently responsible for the Explosive Detection Unit, the Special Operations Unit, the Traffic Motor Unit, the Honor Guard, and the Crisis Negotiation Unit. Some of his greatest professional achievements include being the Incident Commander for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Annual Police Week and Dulles Day Plane Pull event sponsored by the Special Olympics.

Lieutenant Edwards is a member of the Airport Law Enforcement Agencies Network (ALEAN) and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE).
