Mr. Stuart Hatfield is the Deputy Division Chief, Maneuver Division, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-8, Department of the Army in the Pentagon, where he manages the US Army’s $34.4 billion modernization budget and capability requirements for Combat Vehicles, Soldier Equipment and Weapons, and Synthetic Training Environment (STE) programs.
Stu has served the Army for over 34 years. His Army Civilian assignments include Division Chief for the Human-Machine Integration Division, managing the Army’s $5.7 billion modernization budget for Robotic and Autonomous Systems (RAS), small Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (sUAS), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Synthetic Training Environment (STE) programs. Stu was the Army Staff lead integrator for Robotics, representing the Army on the Joint RAS Enterprise (JRASE) to synchronize concepts, requirements, resources, technology, and standards for RAS across the Department of Defense and leading the US Army RAS delegation for the Australia - United Kingdom – United States (AUKUS) Pillar 2 capabilities. Stu also served as the Deputy Division Chief managing the Army’s $18 billion Mission Command Modernization Portfolio for Tactical Network, Enterprise Network, Satellite Communications, Mission Command Platforms and Software, Defensive Cyber, Assured Position Navigation and Timing, and Power Generation programs. Prior to becoming an Army Civilian, he served for 23 years as a Regular Army Armored Cavalry officer and strategic planner in a variety of command, staff, and combat assignments, including multiple tours in Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Stu holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York; a Master of Business Administration from Baker College, Flint, Michigan; and a Master of Military Art and Science from the US Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, KS. His military education includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, the US Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School, the Army Command and General Staff College, the Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS). Stu is currently attending the US Army War College.
Stu’s civilian awards include Army Meritorious Civilian Service Medal (2d award). Stu was honored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense for the Ground Robotics Award of Excellence in 2018 and the National Defense Industrial Association as the Ground Robotics Champion for 2012.
