A native of Columbus, Ohio, Colonel Scott Pence entered the US Army following graduation from the University of Michigan in 1998.
His first assignment was to an M1A1 tank platoon at Joint Base Lewis-McCord that soon transitioned to the first U.S. Army Stryker Brigade. Pence was one of first three Stryker Recce platoon leaders and worked with TRADOC to inform Stryker reconnaissance doctrine. After the Armor Captain’s Course, Pence served as an M1A1 Tank company commander in Camp Casey, South Korea. Following company command, Colonel Pence was an instructor at Fort Benning, where the 75th Ranger Regiment selected him as the first Armor officer to serve with the unit. He immediately deployed to Iraq as the Chief of Operations for a joint task force. He then served as the Assistant Regimental Operations Officer for one year followed by service as the Commander, 75th Ranger Regiment Headquarters and Headquarters Company. He deployed twice to Afghanistan as the JSOC LNO to CIA Chief of Station, Kabul and commander of Team Kabul.
Pence served as the plans officer for 173rd Infantry Brigade in Vicenza, Italy and deployed to Wardak, Afghanistan as the operations officer for 2-503 Infantry Battalion. Upon return, he served as the operations officer for 173rd Infantry Brigade. He then served as the executive officer to the Deputy Commander, US Army Europe in support of reassurance initiatives in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Latvia in response to the 2014 Russian attacks. Following completion of the School for Advanced Military Studies (SAMS), Colonel Pence was the commander of 5-73 Cavalry Squadron, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Following battalion-level command, he was selected to be the executive officer for the Combined Arms Center commanding general at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and attended the Advanced Strategic Leadership Studies Program war college. As the garrison commander of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Pence worked with community leaders in support of the renaming of Fort Bragg to Fort Liberty.
Colonel Pence has a B.A. in organizational psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; an M.B.A. from Webster University; an M.A. in operational art from SAMS at Fort Leavenworth; and an M.A. in strategic studies from the Advanced Strategic Leadership Studies Program at Fort Leavenworth.
Colonel Pence is married to Bronwen Rae Pence of East Lansing, Michigan and they have two daughters: Lillian (19) and Eleanor (17).
