‘You’re Stuck With Me,’ Says NYC Mayoral Candidate Anthony Weiner
Despite increasing criticism, Anthony Weiner is rejecting calls for him to quit the New York City mayoral race.
As the race enters its second week, the disgraced former Congressman told the Staten Island Advance: "You're stuck with me."
He vows to press on until the September primary and ride out revelations that his Weiner's sexting escapades continued even after they forced him to quit Congress in 2011
Asked whether he’s a sex addict, Mr. Weiner said:"Addiction has a clinical meaning, and I've been told it doesn't apply here."
Top aides to President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton are calling for Mr. Weiner to pull out of the race and his campaign manager.
But despite that, he said on Sunday: ‘We’ve gotten more volunteers and more people coming over the transom to help the campaign in the last several days than any time since the campaign started.
However, Democratic strategist David Axelrod, who guided Obama to victory twice, said Mr. Weiner is wasting his time.
Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Mr. Axelrod said: "At this point, it’s absurd. He is not going to be the next mayor of New York. He is wasting time and space.
"Americans believe in second chances, but not third chances.
"It’s time for him to go away, and let New York have its mayor’s race,"
Fellow candidate William Thompson also used the weekend to gran some headlines.
Mr. Thompson, who is the current New York Controller, is the only black candidate and has said his natural instinct was to steer clear of the topic of race.
But on Sunday he said he felt compelled to speak out after George Zimmerman’s acquittal of murder charges.
Addressing the congregation at Abundant Life Church in Brooklyn he described New York’s stop-and-frisk tactics as racial profiling akin to George Zimmerman's alleged actions in Trayvon Martin's death.
"Trayvon Martin did die because he was black. Of that there is no doubt," Mr. Thompson said.
