Obama’s Popularity Falls in New Approval Rating Poll

More voters now disapprove than approve of President Obama’s job performance, according to the latest approval rating survey.

In the Quinnipiac University poll, his overall approval rating has dropped from 48 percent a month ago to 45 percent currently.

Conducted between May 22-May 28 among 1,419 registered voters, the new poll shows a 49 percent disapproval rate, up from 45 percent a month ago.

Among independent voters, the disparity is more pronounced, with 37 percent approval and 57 percent disapproval.

A month ago those figures were 42 percent approval and 48 disapproval.

The shift reflects voters’ dissatisfaction over three scandals that have plagued the Obama administration in the last month, CBS News reports.

Firstly, the IRS has come under heavy criticism for having targeted conservative groups for tougher scrutiny when applying for tax-exempt status.

Secondly, many observers were shocked when it was revealed the Justice Department had subpoenaed the phone records and other information from journalists who were investigating stories about national security.

Lastly, voters have been unimpressed by the administration’s handling of the inquiry into last year's terrorist attacks in Benghazi.

Asked whether Mr. Obama is honest and trustworthy, 49 percent of voters in the new poll say he is, with 47 percent arguing he is not.

When that question was asked in September 2011, 58 percent said he was honest and 37 percent said he was not.
