Precision Mortars Are On The Way

The U.S. Army is beginning to field smart mortar rounds in Afghanistan, giving infantry commanders the ability to fire at targets with greater precision and from closer ranges. New 120-mm, GPS-guided, XM395 mortar cartridges are expected to reduce the risks of collateral damage, friendly-fire errors, and the number of rounds that must be fired.
