Richard has more than 20 years of experience in designing and conducting clinical trials and executing clinical research across all phases of drug and drug/device development, including deep expertise in pain clinical development. Serving as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at multiple companies, Richard has led large teams spanning clinical development, biostatistics, pharmacovigilance, clinical pharmacology, health outcomes and economics, and regulatory affairs.
Richard held roles of increasing responsibility at Pacira Pharmaceuticals, culminating as CMO, where he led the global development and advancement of Pacira's lead product, EXPAREL, a non-opioid long-lasting injectable local anesthetic for post-surgical pain. During his 10-year tenure at Pacira, he successfully redesigned the company's clinical trials process and oversaw clinical research and development, leading to the acceleration of several pipeline candidates, including ZILRETTA, a non-opioid, long-lasting injectable for knee pain, as well as approval of expanded indications and pediatric populations for EXPAREL, based on innovative clinical development strategies. In his most recent role, Richard served as President, Global Product Development & Chief Medical Officer at Lyndra Therapeutics, responsible for advancing the LYNX™ drug delivery platform and evolving and overseeing the portfolio strategy and product development from preclinical through commercialization as well as external partnerships and alliances. Prior to joining Lyndra, Richard also served as Chief Medical Officer at VeroScience, where he oversaw the successful filing of CYCLOSET, a first-in-class treatment for type 2 diabetes. Richard is a proven leader with strong integrity, who demonstrates a profound commitment to excellence in all matters of clinical drug development and patient safety, and motivates others to reach the highest performance levels, even in the face of daunting challenges.
Richard earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tennessee and a Doctor of Medicine from the Quillen College of Medicine at Eastern Tennessee State University. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the Medical Corp of the U.S. Navy and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, serving as chief resident. He received a Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. Prior to his career in industry, he held several academic appointments, including Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
