COL Gary Beard was commissioned a 2LT of Air Defense Artillery in May 1997 following graduation (with Merit) from the United States Naval Academy with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Upon commissioning, he attended the ADA Officer Basic Course (FAAD Track) and Airborne School en route to his first duty station. Assigned to Fort Hood, TX, COL Beard served as a Bradley Stinger Fighting Vehicle Platoon Leader, Battery Executive Officer, and Battalion S1/Adjutant in 4-5 ADA, 1CD from April 1998 until September 2000. He then attended the Engineer Officer Advance Course at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. COL Beard was next assigned as the commander of C/1-4 ADA, 3BCT, 1AD, Fort Riley, KS, from May 2001 until August 2003. He deployed the unit to Baghdad, Iraq for OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. Following his service in Iraq, COL Beard was assigned to Fort Irwin, CA as the ADA Observer/Controller for the COBRA Team from September 2003 until May 2005. He was then selected for the Office of the Secretary of Defense/Joint Chiefs of Staff/Army Staff Intern program, attending classes at Georgetown University and earning a MS in Public Policy Management. During his utilization tour in the Pentagon, COL Beard was first assigned to the J6 (C4ISR) Directorate, the Joint Staff where he served as an Action Officer in the Assured Information Sharing Division from June 2006 until June 2007. He then reported to the Army Staff where he served as the Aide de Camp to The Inspector General of the Army from June 2007 until July 2008. COL Beard next attended ILE at Fort Leavenworth, KS. COL Beard then reported to 1-1 ADA, Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan in July 2009, serving as the Battalion S3 and then Battalion XO until May 2011. He reported to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait as the XO to the Deputy Commanding General-Operations, USARCENT from June 2011-June 2012. In this role, he supported OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and OPERATION NEW DAWN. COL Beard next served in the Joint Integrated Air and Missile Defense Organization (JIAMDO), the Joint Staff J8 as the Chief of the Interoperability Branch from June 2012 until July 2014. Assigned again to Fort Hood, TX, COL Beard served as the Commander of 1-44 ADA until Sept 2016, deploying the battalion to Kuwait to support OPERATION FREEDOM SENTINEL. Following battalion command, he served as the III Corps SGS from Oct 2016 until June 2017 and then reported to Carlisle Barracks, PA where he was a Distinguished Graduate of the US Army War College, earning a MS in Strategic Studies. COL Beard assumed his current duties as the Army Capability Manager, ADA Brigade (Tactical and Short Range Air Defense Artillery) in July 2018. COL Beard’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (6), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (2), Army Achievement Medal (4), National Defense Service Medal (2), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal (3), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon (2), and the Army Service Ribbon. His Unit Awards are the Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation (2), Valorous Unit Award, and the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation. Additionally, he is authorized to wear the Parachutist Badge, the Joint Staff Identification Badge, and the Army Staff identification Badge. COL Beard is married the former Shay Lowery, of Canton, GA. They have 2 children and currently reside at Fort Sill, OK.
