Scott Mathews

Senior Advisor, Intelligence Department of Homeland Security

Scott Mathews is the Senior Advisor for Intelligence and Privacy in the Department of Homeland Security Privacy Office.

In this position Scott leads efforts to resolve privacy issues that arise in DHS intelligence activities, with additional responsibilities for the use of unmanned aircraft and managing insider threats.

He has represented the United States at the OECD Working Party on Information Security and Privacy and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Privacy Committee.


Before coming to DHS, Scott served at the Department of Commerce where he negotiated with China on privacy and cybersecurity issues; represented the United States on the US–China Joint Committee on Commerce and Trade; and helped negotiate more than a dozen Free Trade Agreements.


He is a recipient of a National Intelligence Professional Award, the Department of Homeland Security Chief Privacy Officer’s Outstanding Service Award, the Department of Commerce Silver Medal for meritorious federal service and numerous special service awards.
