Senator Dick Durbin has landed the role as Chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, an influential body that makes spending decisions for the military and intelligence communities.
Areas of focus of the subcommittee, which approved spending of almost $600 billion for the current year, also include the war in Afghanistan, other overseas contingency plans and financing for procurement, research and military personnel.
