Military Social Networking and Military Blogs: Lindy Kyzer Discusses Military Online Community Activitiy

Emerging media has taken the Military machine by storm and leading from the front is the Army Public Affairs. Specifically the New Media Directorate within the Army is charged with all aspects of social media and new/emerging media.

One of the big names behind the push is not even a uniform wearer but, a huge supporter Lindy Kyzer. Lindy in her short time with the Army has hosted dozens of episodes of the DOD bloggers roundtable on blogtalkradio.com and has interviewed commanders, officers, enlisted and those who are in the fight oversees.  The New Media Directorate is itself a new command within the Army Public Affairs realm having just formed this year. Under the guidance of LTC Kevin Arata, the office hosts the Army’s official Facebook page, Twitter account, Flickr page and many others.

The Army is leading the way in the push of social media to all commands and recently released a memorandum lifting the now few year ban on the popular social site Facebook. Lindy and her team constantly are updating and providing the American public with real time information into what’s going on in the Army across the globe and here at home. The Twitter feeds and picture uploads to Flickr also give the general public an unprecedented look into the day to day operations and in some cases combat operations. The Army recently launched a Facebook page specifically dedicated to the Army’s operations in Afghanistan and even features a page featuring the Commanding General in Iraq. Lindy discusses in this podcast different ways that the Army is taking to improve communications across a broad spectrum of social media and the web.
