What are the Top Military Duty Stations and Tours of Duty?

Last year IDGA suggested a possible top 5 Military Duty Stations and Tours of Duty. We sang the praises of bases in Key West, the Spanish Coast, Bavaria, Hawaii, and Naples, Italy.
And did the responses pour in! How did we make our selections? Why those Stations? Why weren’t there any Army facilities on the list?
The vast majority of our readers enjoyed the list, and many seconded our choices. But many of you also made it clear that while several of these locations might be wonderful places to visit, a great tourist attraction did not equal a great place to be stationed:
-
“Naples, Italy??? High crime, frequent strikes, garbage piled to the rooftops. NOT what I would consider a great place to be stationed.”
-
“Not entirely sure how Garmisch can be included....while a great place to visit, I am would not necessarily treat it as a duty station most of us could be assigned to.”
- “Placing Pearl Harbor-Hickam as the #1 duty station is questionable… I can honestly say that Hawaii is one of the last places a service member wants to be located.”
And those are just some of the comments we published!
So now it’s your turn.
Do you love where you’re stationed now, or were stationed in the past? Is there anywhere that you’ve always wanted to be assigned? Maybe your criteria for choosing a “Top” tour has little do to with golden beaches or exotic locales, but a place where you would like to raise a family. Maybe there are important considerations that we didn’t take into account. So have it—what are the top military duty stations and calls of duty, according to those who truly know? We’ll be publishing your Top 5 list in a future newsletter and here on IDGA.org
