Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is calling for greater cooperation with Western Europe on cyber security issues.

Mr Panetta, currently in the middle of a week-long trip to various European cities, spoke to reporters after meeting with Spain's Defense Minister Pedro Morenès in Madrid on Tuesday.

He said: "Our discussion today focused on how to expand the defense cooperation in new ways to meet the challenges of the 21st century."

Exploring deeper military partnerships will, he said, "strengthen our capabilities" in the cyber arena.

Mr. Panetta also called on strengthening the relationship with Europe on maritime security, defensenews.com reports.

The U.S. has deployed four Navy Aegis destroyers near the western entry to the Mediterranean Sea.

He said: "Our decision to move ahead with this new deployment at a time of significant fiscal pressures reflects our belief that the trans-Atlantic alliance will remain critical for global security in the 21st Century and that we must make investments in order to keep it strong for the future."

Mr. Panetta told Portuguese Defense Minister Josè Pedro Aguiar-Branco in Lisbon earler in the day that the U.S. is keen to increase exercises and training between the Portuguese army and American special operations forces.

The tour moved on to Rome on Wednesday where Mr. Panetta met with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican.

More than 1,000 people were crowded into the Vatican auditorium for Wednesday's general audience, with Panetta sitting in the front row.

The Defense Secretary and several aides lined up to meet the Pope afterwards.
