IED Threat Improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, are one of the biggest threats to US and coalition forces in Afghanistan. It is estimated that IEDs have claimed the lives of 300 Americans in nearly 1,000 attacks over the last year alone. As a result, the military has established schools to train soldiers in how to better identify and disarm IEDs.
